AZUB history

HISTORY

Azub Bike Company was officially founded by Ales Zemanek in 2000. The beginnings of the company are very well described in an interview with Ales, which was run by an enthusiastic recumbent-biker and designer Eva Navratilova.

Why did you choose to name your company AZUB?
Several reasons: Ales Zemanek Uhersky Brod – that was originally the main reason. Looking back, the biggest advantage of the name is its uniqueness. It has no meaning, it is simple to pronounce in other languages and short...

When (and where) did you see the first recumbent bike?
In 1997, when I was on holiday in Norway. It was just a moment, a second or two ... something strange drove past our bus at such a speed, that my natural initial thoughts that it may have been the rover for the disabled were gone immediately. This was enough for the creation of AZUB. By coincidence a review of the Radius recumbent bike was published in the magazine Peloton sometime in the autumn of that year. It became my second Bible for several months.

When did you assemble your first recumbent bike?
The only common ground for my dream about having my own recumbent bike and the reality was the little knowledge from a photograph in the mentioned article. The fork was entitled Kangaroo and those were made in Prague. I managed to contact the founder of the Kangaroo Company and he advised me that a certain Mr. Nakládal of Brno has made several recumbents. Mr. Nakládal and Brno were the only information I had. I called several people of the name Nakládal that I had found in the Yellow Pages and it worked. We agreed to a visit in a couple of days, I rode the first meters on the recumbent bicycle, brought proposals for changes in its structure and within a month I was bringing a frame home. It did not remain in its original state for very long, saw-welding system worked reliably and I gradually began to discover the secrets of recumbent design. Then there was the satisfaction of the result achieved, the bike worked, but then it was not such a strong bond yet. I spent all my time travelling (without the bike) and working extra to compensate the time I spent on the road.

Around the end of 1999, I got down to construction of my first truly customized recumbent, with the idea of its future commercial production. It became a true forerunner of the present AZUB recumbent bikes. In spring 2001 the first three AZUB recumbent bikes left the company to serve the customers.

AZUB milestones

1999 - Aleš Zemánek got down to construction of his first truly customized recumbent, with the idea of its future commercial production.

2001 - First three AZUB recumbent bikes left the company to serve the customers.

2002 - First exhibiting at the world known SPEZI show in Germersheim, Germany and a real enter to German and other foreign markets.

2001 till 2005 - several evolutions of one model with names AZUB 2000, 2001, 3, 4. This model with 20/26“ configuration is still in the range and is called AZUB SIX now. That said, every major evolution of all the bike range is celebrated by the new next number in the name of this particular model.

2005
– Model called MAX was added as a second one. It was developed and built based on customers` need of both big wheels. So there it was. Dual 26“ recumbent bike.

2006 – At the beginning of the year we have introduced our asymetrical rear fork with improved stiffnes, lower weight and greater performance. Also many other improvements came to production and the IPS system was further developed for easier adjustment of our bikes as well. The name of the core model AZUB 4 changed to AZUB 5.

2007 till 2009 - Cooperation between AZUB and australian trike producer Greenspeed on assembling trikes for Europe.

2007 – AZUB Mini was added to our range of models.

2008 - We made a little step back and introduced a new line of recumbents called Mainstream line. Those bikes have had a simple single stay rear fork again with just sliding bearings in the rear fork axle assembly and some other let`s say cheaper technical solutions to make the price a bit more acceptable. Still, those bikes did several hardcore expeditions in South America or Asia and their riders love them.

2009 – ECO 20“ and ECO 16“ was our project of affordable good quality recumbent bike mainly for eastern european countries like Czech, Poland, Hungary or even Ukraine or so, but it was sold in France and Germany and known as one of the most stable recumbents available on the market. Three years later we realized the price went to high and we decided to redesign it, add a folding mechanism and prepare a truly folding recumbent called Origami.

2010
– First AZUB trike called AZUB ECO trike was introduced at the SPEZI show. This model was renamed to aTRIKE in 2014 and than canceled in 2015.

2011 – Just one year after the ECO trike we interduced two other trike models. Folding T-Tris with the same frame as the ECO trike, but with added folding hinge and folding bars, and also the TRIcon with not only folding mechanisms, but also rear suspension and a suitcase/trailer into which you can fold the complete trike for transporting and then use it as a trailer when travelling.

2011 – More then seven years after the first prototype of AZUB TWIN was built, we started to build it for our customers. It soon became a synonym for durable and stiff tandem with both riders pedaling in truly recumbent position. There are several of them which have travelled serious distances during long expeditions.

2011 Autumn – We officialy entered the US market by exhibiting at the first ever Recumbent Cycle Con show in Los Angeles. We also rode a car with three bikes from New York all the way to Los Angeles to visit over 10 dealers on the way.

2012 – We have added the AZUB Origami into our line of recumbent bikes. A folder which use the same super stable frame geometry as the AZUB ECO 20“. People like it for travelling and commuting as well.

2013 – We redesigned and improved all our bikes, introduced new under seat steering on Mainstream Line as well as Top Line bikes and all bikes got a soliding seat bracket into standard set up. The AZUB 5 was renamed to AZUB SIX to show and confirm the next big step.
